The independent film SoulMate by Jack, Jason, and Shane that I designed a book prop for and Mike Tichy provided music for was released today on Amazon Theater Tribeca Film Festival Short Film Competetion.

If you would like to watch SoulMate, you'll first need to login to amazon.com. In the unlikely event that you do not have an amazon.com account, you can sign up for one without purchasing anything. Once you're logged in, visit the screening room. You will be presented with a random film, so you may have to watch other films before SoulMate. You can skip a film after 30 seconds of playing it. If you want a rate a film, you'll need to watch the whole thing. Each film will last no more than 7 minutes and some films are much shorter.

A monkey-eating Amazonian fish was caught with a piece of hot dog by a 14-year-old camper on the banks of the Adventureland lake in Bensalem last week.

[The fish] can grow up to 5 to 6 feet and jump that high to catch prey...they eat spiders, insects, small birds and even small young monkeys that wander too close to the water.

The fact that this fish eats monkeys is scarey enough, but the fish grows 5 to 6 feet long?! This isn't a fish you are winning at the school fair and going home with in a clear plastic bag with water.

Seeing Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith yesterday tied together two distinct parts of my life: the toys and movies that shaped my imagination throughout my childhood and the good storytelling and spectacular special effects that I love about movies in my adult life. Therefore, call me biased but this is the Internet, so you should be used to dealing with that.

Star Wars Episodes I and II unarguably had great digital effects, but while the storytelling may not be as bad as all the die-hard fans of the original Star Wars trilogy say, it was definitely not as strong as the older Star Wars movies. On the other hand, Episodes IV, V, and VI had a great storyline, but while some of the special effects of the late seventies and early eighties can still be considered pretty amazing, most effects pale in comparison with the standards of today's action movies.

Episode III ties the two trilogies together very well with great effects and by closing the loop on much of the storyline between the two sets of movies. Anyone who had seen the other Star Wars movies knows how Revenge of the Sith will ultimately end, but bringing you through the tragedy that Anakin faces definitely lets you see Darth Vader in a new light.

For me Star Wars movies were a great escape from reality, but never an emotional undertaking. However, there are two scenes in particular in Revenge of the Sith that show the demise of the Jedi that were really upsetting to me. Maybe it was the child within me coming out, but more than likely it was the father who I am today.

For all those who said this year would be different but are still wondering how you are going to finish your taxes by midnight tonight, you'll want to check out these websites that offer free tax preparation and filing.

TurboTax agreed to develop a free version of its online filing software to avoid the government doing the same and potentially hijacking many TurboTax customers. Keep in mind that only the basic federal offering is free - don't fill in the state tax return section unless you mind paying a $30 fee. States like NJ and PA also offer free filing (albeit not as nice as TurboTax's), so check out your state's website.

However, the truth of it is this book - or at least the front and back cover of it - will be appearing in a short film by Jason Salmon and my good friend Jack Reiling.

Yes, the photo to the right is me, but from a snapshot taken in the middle of a beard removing event. Since shaving a beard only comes every so often, you've got to take full advantage of the moment with photographic documentation.
I can't wait until the film comes out so I can see if my book actually makes the final cut.

My book "Find Your Soul Mate...Before It's Too Late" will be hitting the shelves at midnight tonight. After years of research watching Oprah and Jerry Springer, I have concluded that I too can scare people into thinking that they may soon be running out of time to find true love. The book is very believable too; if I hadn't already found true love with my beautiful wife Christi, I would be nervous too. Although most of the book is just pictures I took of rose petals, champagne flutes, and candles, I think this should only compliment the text which is based on the thousands of fortune cookie sayings (and lucky numbers) that I've compiled over the past 20 years. I look forward to a review on Metacritic any day now.

One of my good friends, Mike Tichy, has just released his third solo album called when the sun went down. I'm now on my fourth run through the CD in so many days and the songs are infectious. Even after the first time through the album, I caught myself humming more than a handful of the tracks which is in contraction to what I would expect since I also consider this album to require some digesting. It's not because Tichy's style is way out there; it's almost just the opposite with this album being a bit more mainstream than his last. If I had to describe his music based just on this CD, I would say it is a mix somewhere between Elliott Smith, Phish, The Allman Brothers, and The Beatles.
Two of my favorite tracks are neanderthal and i'm on hold. Here's the title track.

The songs on the CD were performed by The Mike Tichy Disaster which in addition to Mike Tichy includes two other mikes and a joe: Mike Low, Mike Catapano, and Joe Vigliotti. As you know, Tichy is a staple band member of my indie band Cuscus and Catapano has also contributed his musical talents on previous Cuscus recordings.

If you are interested in booking The Mike Tichy Disaster or in obtaining a copy of the new CD, please contact Tichy through his website.

I love the way Octopuses move so fluidly in the sea. I had always heard that they were very intelligent creatures and researchers have recently found that octopuses are pretty sneaky when it comes to outwitting predators.

Octopuses, known for using camouflage to avoid predators, have been observed apparently trying to sneak away by walking on two arms while pretending to be a bunch of algae.

The video is simply amazing. One octopus sneaks away looking like a bush and another camouflaged as a coconut.
Some see the web as a great way to get your art seen by thousands of additional viewers, but an artist named Bansky had a better idea. Dressed as a British pensioner, he installed four of his own pieces of art in New York City's finest museums - the Met, the Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Museum, and the MoMA.

As far as I'm concerned, any artist with the following statement deserves to be displayed in these museums:

This historic occasion has less to do with finally being embraced by the fine art establishment and is more about the judicious use of a fake beard and some high strength glue.

As of the time of the article posting on kottke.org, the pieces at the Met and MoMA had been removed, but the other two pieces remained on display.

I was first introduced to the tagging craze with Adobe Photoshop Album which I received as a Christmas present last year. Among other things, the software allows you to "tag" your photos with the people, things, or events that pertain to the picture. In other words, you are able to quickly describe your photos so that you can search or filter through them later.

Tagging has been active in the online world for some time, but is starting to hit the mainstream. The most popular things being tagged are blogs, bookmarks, and photos. Technorati does all three and aggregates the information into a psuedo online newspaper with literally millions of individual publishers. My favorite photo tagging site Flickr and I am starting to use del.icio.us to organize my bookmarks.

The power of tagging is two-fold. One advantage is that you are no longer limited to storing things in folder structure. Folders are great when the things you are storing clearly only belong in one folder. However its difficult to find things later if they could have logically been stored in more than one place. For example, does that picture of Aunt Sally belong in the Family folder or the 2001 folder? Tags allow you to assign multiple categories to a document so it can be found via more than one means. The second advantage is in the ability to share information with others with similar interests. Want to find monkey photos or surreal art links? Believe it or not, someone else does too.

I expect the major search engines will delve deeper into tagging in the near future to allow the greater public to take advantage of this simple yet powerful categorization tool. Until then, start tagging.

I used to listen to real music. Sure, everyone has their own definition of real music, but when I say "real" music, I mean music meant for enjoyment by adults. Now that my first son is just over a year old, almost all of the real music in my life has been replaced with wiggly music. If you are in a similar situation as me, then you probably know the lyric (or one just as non-sensically catchy) that goes "flap your wings just like a birdie - chirpie, chirpie. chirpie, cheep, cheep, cheep" and are thinking of seeking professional help. The song is almost illegally too catchy. But don't blame yourself! Scientists may have found an explanation of why songs get stuck in our heads. Now all I need is a way to get them out.
